Northrop Grumman, one of the leading aerospace and defense technology companies in the United States, is hard at work investing and engaging in social media. At the same time, they are not above learning from their mistakes along the way.
Today, almost all Northrop Grumman’s press releases and events are accompanied by similar social media events, according to Mark Root, Northrup Grumman’s director of media relations.
This helps the company utilize the latest and fastest growing vessel for news media. While social media is not used extensively by Northrop Grumman nor media outlets to communicate, it still serves many purposes. Social media is integral to helping out any company establish its brand amongst investors. Amongst them, social media is often used to gauge public opinion of the company.
There are still improvements to be made in Northrop Grumman’s handling of social media, and Root readily admits that. “There are things we can improve in social media,” says Root. “More video would help. Multimedia in general can be improved.”
During the semester of fall 2013, the GMU Communication Department’s Insight Committee hosted a career forum entitled “Taming the Communication Beast.” During that event, a variety of companies were present to discuss modern events and issues surrounding communication in the 21st century. Northrop Grumman was one of the many companies present; they were represented by Lauren Green, their manager of social media.
During the fall semester of 2014, the Insight Committee will once again host a career forum, this time entitled “All about Social.” Once again, several companies will be at the forum to share their ideas and thoughts on modern day social media. Like last year, Northrop Grumman will be there too.
